A beautiful plant does not depend only on watering or light. The soil is the base that supports its roots, regulates humidity, allows it to breathe and provides it with some of the nutrients it needs to grow strongly.
In Ibiza, choosing the substrate well is especially important. Heat, intense sun, wind, and frequent watering can compact the soil, dry it out too quickly, or cause excess moisture if the mixture does not drain well. Variety of plants for every corner
Universal soil for plants
Universal soil is a practical choice for many indoor and outdoor plants, window boxes, pots and small transplants. It has a balanced structure that helps retain moisture without leaving the root completely waterlogged.
It is a good base for ornamental plants, aromatic plants, seasonal flowers, vegetables and pots for general use. If the plant needs more drainage, it can be mixed with perlite. If you need more water retention, it can be enhanced with vermiculite or coconut fiber.
Ideal for: indoor plants, window boxes, aromatic plants, flowers, vegetables and general transplants.
Substrate for cacti and succulents
Cacti and succulents need very draining soil. If the substrate retains too much moisture, the roots can easily rot, especially in pots without good ventilation or in shady areas.
This type of mixture usually incorporates mineral materials, sand, gravel, perlite or other components that help evacuate excess water and keep the root more aerated.
Ideal for: cacti, succulents, aloe vera, succulents, euphorbias and low maintenance compositions.
Substrate for orchids
Orchids should not be planted in normal universal soil. Many varieties, such as Phalaenopsis, need a very aerated mix, usually based on bark, fiber, coconut chips or other materials that allow the roots to breathe.
The objective is to maintain some humidity, but without compacting or waterlogging. If you have an orchid that does not bloom, has soft roots or the soil looks degraded, perhaps the time has come to change the substrate.
Ideal for: Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium and other indoor orchids.
worm castings
Worm castings are a very useful organic amendment to improve the soil and provide nutrients in a gentle way. It helps to enrich the substrate, improves soil activity and can be used in pots, flower beds, orchards and planters.
It does not always replace a complete substrate, but it is a great complement when you want to renew impoverished soil or give extra nutrition to your plants.
Ideal for: orchards, aromatic plants, potted plants, window boxes, fruit trees, ornamental plants and seasonal maintenance.
Perlite
Perlite is a lightweight material that is mixed with soil to improve drainage and aeration. It is especially useful on plants sensitive to excess humidity or in large pots where the substrate can compact over time.
Adding perlite helps water circulate better and gives the roots more oxygen.
Ideal for: houseplants, cacti, succulents, cuttings, large pots and mixes that need more aeration.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite helps retain moisture and nutrients within the substrate. It is useful when a plant dries too quickly, when we work with seedbeds or when we want to reduce the frequency of watering in certain mixtures.
It is not used the same as perlite: while perlite improves drainage, vermiculite helps retain more moisture.
Ideal for: seedbeds, cuttings, sunny balconies, plants that need constant humidity and growing mixtures.
Coconut fiber and substrate improvers
Coconut fiber helps to lighten the mixture, retain moisture and improve the structure of the substrate. It can be used as part of potting mixes, urban gardens, window boxes and plants that need fluffier soil.

Ideal for: custom mixes, vegetable gardens, window boxes, tropical plants and pots that need a lighter soil.
What soil does each plant need?
indoor plants
They need a light, aerated mixture with a good balance between moisture and drainage. In many cases a quality universal soil with some perlite works.
Recommended: universal soil + perlite if the plant suffers from excess water.
Cactus and succulents
They need a mineral and very draining substrate. Better to avoid heavy or too organic soils.
Recommended: specific substrate for cacti and succulents.
Aromatic
Rosemary, lavender, thyme or sage appreciate light and draining mixtures. Basil, mint or parsley may need a little more moisture.
Recommended: light universal soil + drainage improvement depending on the species.
orchids
They should not go on normal land. They need bark and materials that allow a lot of aeration.
Recommended: specific substrate for orchids.
Garden and vegetables
They need rich, loose soil with a good capacity to retain nutrients.
Recommended: culture substrate + worm humus or organic amendment.
Palm trees, shrubs and large plants
They need volume, stability, drainage and a mix that does not compact quickly.
Recommended: structured substrate + drainage + maintenance fertilizer.

How to choose the right substrate
Identify the type of plant
An orchid does not need the same soil as a lavender, a monstera, a cactus or a tomato plant. The species marks the starting point.
See where the plant lives
Indoor, terrace, garden, direct sun, shade, wind or small pot. Location greatly changes moisture and drainage needs.
Check how the water behaves
If the soil remains soaked for many days, there is a lack of drainage. If it dries too quickly, you may need more moisture retention or a different mix.
Consider the pot
Clay pots breathe more and dry faster. Plastic or ceramic ones retain more moisture. The choice of substrate must accompany the container.
Renew the earth when it touches
Over time, the substrate loses structure, becomes compacted and runs out of nutrients. Changing or improving the soil helps the plant grow strong again.
